LG-Display show world’s largest 3D panel with UHD resolution

LG Display plans to showcase an extensive lineup of LCD products that harness cutting-edge 3D and IPS technologies at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2010 taking place in Seattle, Washington, during May 25~27.

LG Display will showcase a 47-inch 3D TV LCD product for use with polarized glasses that dramatically reduces crosstalk to less than 1 percent, a level that is nearly imperceptible to the viewer. Additionally, the company will exhibit the world’s largest 84-inch UHD (ultra high definition) 3D panel with 3840X2160 resolutions, four times the resolution of previous full HD TV panels with 1920X1080 resolutions. Furthermore, a 47-inch TV panel that uses a liquid lens to eliminate the need for 3D glasses will be on display.

LG Display also plans to promote the advantages of panels that feature IPS(In-plane switching) technology by installing a separate ‘IPS Zone’ within its booth. The zone will feature a 240Hz 47-inch LCD TV with 3ms MPRT (motion picture response time); a high-end, high-resolution 32-inch monitor for the broadcasting industry; a 9.7-inch smartbook product utilizing AH-IPS technology; and a 3.98-inch UHD mobile high resolution (394 PPI) LCD panel that harnesses the world’s leading super high resolution panel technology.

The ‘Touch’ zone will include LG Display’s full HD 21.5-inch optical touch LCD panel for monitors that offer both the advantages of capacitive touch technology which respond well to quick and light touches, and resistive touch technology which is ideal for more exacting touches such as writing on small surfaces. Other products include a 13.3-inch on-cell touch type LCD panel and a 3-inch OLED panel.

In the ‘Next-Generation Display’ Zone, LG Display will present its advanced technologies including the 10.1-inch curved LCD with slim glass; the world’s thinnest TV panel which measures just 2.6mm in thickness; a 15.6-inch notebook LCD product that realizes the world’s lowest power consumption levels; a 9.7-inch color e-paper display scheduled to begin mass production within the year; and a 19-inch flexible e-paper.

During SID 2010, LG Display will also operate a separate ‘IPS Lounge’ within Washington State Convention Center to introduce LED IPS technology and conduct marketing activities to promote the advantages of panels that utilize IPS technology, inluding a comparison of IPS and TN monitors, and a display of IPS products.

LOST Finale Breaks BitTorrent Records

LOST has come to an end, and the final episodes are now clogging up the BitTorrent pipelines.

Sunday night ABC aired the final episode of LOST in North America. It was also shown in 59 countries either on the same night, or within 48 hours. It's speculated that ABC chose this schedule to reduce the amount of pirating so that fans could get the full impact of the ending without torrent-based spoilers hitting the Internet. Apparently that didn't work.

It seems that despite ABC's efforts, the final two episodes of LOST have shattered all previous BitTorrent records with close to a million downloads in the first 20 hours. In fact, at peak, more than 100,000 people were sharing a single torrent at the same time. Typically a single episode of LOST is downloaded just under 1.5 million times in its first appearance on BitTorrent. However the two final episodes--What They Died For and The End--are expected to reach four or five million downloads by the end of the week.

A large percentage of the downloads come from outside the United States, with 15-percent linked to Australian fans who couldn't wait for the season finale to air on Wednesday night. Anxious fans in other countries experiencing ABC's 48-hour delay also jumped on BitTorrent. Although some of us haven't seen the series conclusion, the controversy surrounding LOST's final hours is also a contributing factor to the record number of downloads on a global scale. There's no doubt that fans who missed the original ABC airings will flock to BitTorrent rather than wait for reruns of the episodes this summer.

Pandigital is a gadget manufacturer which is famous for its digital photo frame series. The company has decided to enter the e-Reader market by debuting the Pandigital Novel. The new e-Reader boasts a full-color (800 x 600) touchscreen LCD display, a built-in Wi-Fi, an orientation sensor, a 1GB of internal memory and an SD/ MMC card slot. Its rechargeable battery provides enough juice for up to six hours on a full charge. What’s more, this e-book reader also provides an access to Barnes & Noble’s eBookstore and supports PDF, ePUB and HTML file formats. Measuring 5.5-inch x 7.5-inch x 0.5-inch, the Pandigital Novel retails for about $199.99 each.

Samsung S-Pad coming in August?

Well, we’re apparently in the time of the tablets. First it was the netbooks, then the e-book readers, and now the big thing is everyone has to have a tablet to peddle. Samsung is doing things a little differently, but I don’t know if it’ll be different enough to make an impact in the (soon to be) flooded market.

Word is, Samsung is making a 7-inch AMOLED tablet, expect to launch in South Korea in August. Like the iPad, it’ll sport 3G and Wi-fi, but it’ll also have USB and access to Samsung’s Apps. No word on pricing, we’ll let you know if we hear anything more.

Aigo's surprisingly sexy 7-inch N700 tablet packs Android 2.1 and Tegra 2

Go 'head Aigo! Get down with your bad self. Quite frankly, we never anticipated Aigo / Patriot to come through with a me-too tablet that actually made us take a second glance, but darn if this one isn't quite the looker. And that's before you've even had a moment to digest the specifications sheet. According to new details surfacing in China, this 7-inch machine will hum along on a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor and feature NVIDIA's Tegra 2 graphics chipset. There's also 512MB of DDR2 memory, an 800 x 480 pixel multitouch display, 4/16/32GB of inbuilt storage, a USB socket, microSD slot, HDMI output, inbuilt WiFi, optional 3G WWAN, audio in / out and a 3,120mAh battery. Android 2.1 will be the OS of choice, but crucial details surrounding price and availability are sorely missing. Call us crazy, but we'll actually be keeping an eye out for specifics on both.

Utilizing comex’s “Spirit” jailbreak, the userland exploit works by taking advantage of security holes currently present in the iPhone OS. Speedlink Repute mousepad now available

Speedlink introduced the Repute, a new gaming mousepad with a microfibre structure surface. The pad measures 320mm x 270mm, it has a thickness of 2mm and features a heat-treated coating to minimise friction. The Speedlink Repute should be available in retail stores for around 14.90EUR.
The large surface area offers more than enough space even for broad mouse movements in critical situations. The pad’s gliding area is a real treat to use thanks to the ergonomic cutout on its lower side, and its special surface coating - comprising a heat-treated microfiber structure - noticeably improves gliding characteristics while increasing tracking precision at the same time. The pad’s backing comprises a special non-slip material which smoothes out slight unevennesses and offers loads of grip.

iPad 3G gets torn down

Desperate to see what’s under the smooth exterior of your new iPad 3G but don’t want to crack it open and void the warranty? Fear not, friend. iFixit has done the dirty work (very cleanly, I might add) and taken the iPod touch jumbo edition to pieces. There aren’t a lot of surprises, but hey, it’s Saturday afternoon and you want to see the guts of an expensive gadget. Get another cup of coffee.

The internals really are very similar to the vanilla iPad’s — the main difference is the communications board, sporting all the fun 3G elements and the A-GPS module. The chips and parts are listed in the teardown if you’re thinking of tinkering. Personally, I wonder whether a modified Wi-Fi antenna might be a worthwhile modification.

Ubuntu 10.04 ' Lucid Lynx' arrives on the scene

It's been less than a year since Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" was released, but the next big version of the Linux OS has now already arrived to take its place: Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx." In addition to the usual tweaks and fixes, this one promises a boot speed that is "noticeably quicker" on almost any machine (and especially on those with SSDs), along with a range of new features including a social networking-oriented "Me Menu," Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0 for easier access to new software, and a slew of new cloud-based services courtesy of Ubuntu One -- not to mention the Ubuntu One music store. The release also marks the first time that GIMP doesn't come pre-installed (you get F-Spot instead), and it is naturally complemented by Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition, which promises even faster boot speeds and other optimizations.
