HBO to enable TV show download from PlayStation Network

Thanks to a partnership between Time Warner and Sony, we could very well be looking at HBO offering TV shows over the PlayStation Network, with new shows being added each Tuesday. Of course, this won't be free in any sense since Sony PS3 owners will have to fork out a "premium price" for it - to the tune of $3. There will be 11 shows offered in DVD format, and while they will not air instantly, they should all arrive almost a year after first making a debut on HBO. That's a long time to wait - we're not too sure whether this idea will take off or not. What do you think?

Nintendo net profit declines for first time in six years, panic remains inadvisable

Nintendo's 2009 financial results have just been released and, shockingly enough, the company hasn't been able to break its profit record yet again. In fact, annual net profit dipped -- for the first time in six tenths of a decade -- to $2.44 billion, a 12 percent drop from the previous fiscal year's $2.79 billion. Sales of the Wii were down 21 percent year-on-year, but Nintendo still managed to shift 20 million units globally, so it's not exactly all doom and gloom at Mario HQ. And while Microsoft and Sony are working on their own motion-sensing offerings, Ninty is reloading the only way it knows how -- bringing the noir Wii to fashion-conscious Americans, and an all-new 3D portable console for the rest of us. Anyone willing to bet against Nintendo's income sheet improving next year?

Civilization 5 discussed at GamePro

Game Pro had a chat with Civilization 5 lead designer Jon Shafer, you can read it over here.
This focus on history is deeply relevant for any designer of the Civilization franchise. Even if you don't have Shafer's degree in history, Civilization already has an enormous advantage by being set in real places, using real technologies, fighting with real weapons. "You don't have to read a manual and figure out the rules of the world," Meier explains. "You get that chariots are cool and that gunpowder will be handy to have at some point-and that Genghis Kahn is not to be trusted." Even the most novice players (such as those Meier is hoping to attract to his upcoming Facebook version of the game, Civilization Network) immediately understand basic concepts like irrigation and sanitation and can skim along the surface of the game before diving deep into the mechanics. It's this sense of familiarity that makes Meier's sandbox that much more fun to play in.

Speedlink Repute mousepad now available

Speedlink introduced the Repute, a new gaming mousepad with a microfibre structure surface. The pad measures 320mm x 270mm, it has a thickness of 2mm and features a heat-treated coating to minimise friction. The Speedlink Repute should be available in retail stores for around 14.90EUR.
The large surface area offers more than enough space even for broad mouse movements in critical situations. The pad’s backing comprises a special non-slip material which smoothes out slight unevennesses and offers loads of grip.
