iPhone App Review

Taskpaper by Hog Bay Software is a nice iPhone app that allows you to manage tasks and projects and also to write text. I recently bought the app and found that it can also be used as a great tool to implement Autofocus system on iPhone.

Autofocus system proposed by Mark Forster, a time management expert and author of Do It Tomorrow, is less well known than "Getting things done" system of David Allen but deserves more attention as it offers a very simple but highly effective way of getting tasks done.

Autofocus basically consists in working with unordered lists of tasks. The lists are divided into two kinds, namely closed lists and open lists.

You start by putting down all things you need to do on a sheet of paper or on Taskpaper that I will review below. When you are done recording all the tasks, you cross a bar under the list of tasks. Items above the bar is called a closed list. They are called as such because you do not add more tasks in the closed list.

Now, you work on any item on the closed list that you just feel like to do. There is no priority or context required as criteria for what task to do. You just leave it to your intuition.

You work on the task as long as you want. When the task is completed, you mark the task by drawing a strike through over it. If the task is not finished, you do the same marking but also add the item under the bar. You scan through the list and select and work on other tasks again based on your gut feeling.

While doing this scan-work-mark process, if a new task pops up in your mind, you add it under the bar. All the items newly added under the bar are called an open list.

Once all the items in the closed list have been scanned, you go to the open list and check if there is a task that you feel like to do. You do it and mark it as done and/or add it at the end of the open list.

You do the rounds of this work process repeatedly. As time flows, all the tasks in the closed list will be eventually completed or newly added into the open list.

When no task is left in the closed list, you draw a new bar under the open list. Now the existing open list becomes a new closed list.

This repeated cycles of working on closed and open lists help you to get tasks done in an effective manner while leaving no tasks undone. If you want to know more about Autofocus system, visit http://www.markforster.net/autofocus-system.

Now the question is what iPhone apps are out there to implement Autofocus?

The answer is "not many". As of writing this article in September 2010, I found only three apps that may be called Autofocus-friendly. They are Focuspad, Focustodo, and Taskpaper.

Focuspad looks promising app for Autofocus, but stopped working properly since I upgraded to IOS 4.1. For a review on the Focuspad, visit http://www.markforster.net/forum/post/906911

Focustodo quite nicely succeeds in porting Autofocus system onto. However, it has shortcomings like lack of ability to create a bar between the closed and open lists, which is possible in the Focuspad, and inability to move tasks once they are created.

As for Taskpaper, it has double advantage in that it can be used for Autofocus and also for managing tasks, texts and projects. Compared with the two apps above, Taskpaper has much simpler interface.

Any item you create on the blank screen of the app can have three modes of note, task, and project. Once you insert a new item, you can change it into one of the three modes by pressing Enter key.

When you complete a task, you swipe you finger over it from left to right. Then the task is marked as done with a nice looking line. You can also drag and drop any times by pressing them for about one second. This makes it easy to make any items into a subtask or a subproject. You can create as many items as possible by typing each item and pressing Enter keys.

If have plenty of completed tasks, you can mark them as done and collect them at the bottom of the list simply by choosing archive button. This is really convenient feature that easily removes clutter of completed tasks in the list.

Taskpaper does not support one principle of Autofocus that when you do not finish a task in the closed list you cross it out but newly add it into the open list. I solve this problem with a simple drag and drop of the unfinished item from the closed list to the open list.

One of the major strengths of Autofocus system is the simplicity that lies in working a blank paper and creating and working on tasks with no imposition of constraints like deadlines, contexts or others. In this regard, Taskpaper, with its simple but efficient interface and functions, is a nice tool to implement Autofocus

Don't think that Taskpaper is an app that should be used only for managing tasks. You can use it as a great outliner program. Writing a long text gets easier when you type random ideas in the app and later flesh out each idea by adding sub items.

Last but not least, Taskpaper's files are also saved in real time on a website offered by the developer. This ensures that you can always keeps copies of all your documents in a safe place.

Taskpaper has many more potentials not covered in this short review. If you are interested in Autofocus system or just looking for a nice app for todo management, you should definitely try Taskpaper.

Apple's iPhone 4 Vs HTC's Evo 4G Phone

There have been many discussions about which phone is better, the Apple iPhone 4 or the HTC Evo 4G. Many people are comparing the two phones in similarity. If you are considering which phone and network you should go with, you should definitely read this article.

We will start with the iPhone 4. First off, it is on the AT&T network, has many complaints when it comes to service. The iPhone 4 also has issues with the new external antenna that Apple created for this new iPhone. Just like every other iPhone, it is very easy to use. You could teach a three-year-old how to use the phone. Apple has a special ability to make their devices very user-friendly. There are many loyal customers when it comes to Apple. Many of those loyal customers have left the AT&T network and the iPhone because of reception issues. These issues come from two reasons, the AT&T network and the iPhone 4 external antenna problem. Some people will swear by Apple, no matter what the product will be. If you are considering purchasing the iPhone, I would recommend waiting until it is available on another network.

The HTC Evo 4G phone has a lot of features and is on the Sprint network. The good thing about this phone is that it always has service. Sprints network does not drop calls as much as the AT&T network does. Sprint's 3G network is also nationwide, as to where AT&T's 3G network is nationwide, but has many places where edge is only available. The Evo 4G is not as easy to use as the iPhone. HTC did make this phone, along with all of their others, a little more complicated to use. Apple has got everyone beat when it comes to simplicity. The EVO has the ability to do almost everything the iPhone 4 can.this phone also has the ability to add an extended battery, which you can purchase separately. This battery will literally last days, as to where the iPhone usually needs to be chargeda daily.

AT&T does have a faster 3G network than Sprint or Verizon. Almost everywhere tests have been done; this is the common result that is found. However, the HTC Evo as the ability to do for 4G speeds.the 4G network is not available in all areas as of right now. Sprint has plans as we speak to make the 4G available in all major cities within the next 12 to 18 months. There are a lot of major cities in the United States that already have a 4G network. If you live in one of these areas, go to a Sprint store and try out the Evo 4G. you will see hands-down the difference between iPhone 4 and the Evo.

iphone 4 still not recommended by consumer reports

If you recollect, some time ago, way back when Apple first pushed out the iPhone 4 and it was discovered that the iPhone 4 antenna had issues Consumer Reports would not recommend the iPhone 4 because the Apple device had a flaw with the antenna.
Well according to an article over on the Wall Street Journal by Ian Sherr, nothing has changed in as much as Consumer Reports still will not recommend the iPhone 4, basically because Apple has failed thus far to come up with a permanent solution to the antenna issue.
Consumer Reports wrote: “Putting the onus on any owners of a product to obtain a remedy to a design flaw is not acceptable to us. We therefore continue not to recommend the iPhone 4, and call on Apple to provide a permanent fix for the phone’s reception issues.”
The reiteration of Consumer Reports refusal to recommend the iPhone 4 is presumable due to Apple announcing the end of the free bumper case giveaway with Apple stating that the issue with the iPhone 4 antenna was smaller than they originally thought.
However, as Apple was giving the free bumper case with every iPhone 4 sold, how can they tell how many actually experienced the antenna issue? The real test will be after the giveaway stops and how many complaints Apple receives from then on.
Apple apparently declined to comment about Consumer Reports continued refusal to recommend their flawed iPhone 4.

Enough Love for Latest iPods?

Apple's latest batch of iPod announcements was fairly well received, save for a few corners grumbling that the event was lacking in any big news, other than an energetic albeit thin Steve Jobs on stage.

"Apple, Jobs Satisfy But Do Not Surprise," wrote PC Mag.com. Apple's underwhelming announcement: A new iPod and a few upgrades was the Chicago Tribune headline. No big surprises as Apple unveils new iPods said EETimes.com.

The challenge for Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is starting to become what else to do with a music player now approaching its ninth birthday. There are only so many ways to skin a cat and despite a few nifty new features like shake to shuffle, in the end, it's just a music player. Even the Mac faithful on MacRumors.com are beginning to notice.

"The iPhone clearly is overshadowing the entire iPod line," said analyst Rob Enderle, of The Enderle Group (Enderle is a consultant for Dell, which is reported to be working on an iPod competitor).

"Apple has clearly signaled that their focus is on the iPhone and the iPod looks like obsolete technology at this point. It's hard for people to get excited about the iPod because the best iPod is a stripped down iPhone," said Enderle.

But there's no way Apple will get 160 million unit sales from the iPhone, like it has enjoyed with the iPod, since Apple can't control the mobile phone ecosystem like they can with the iPod, Enderle argues. So Apple will have to continue to invest in the iPod and continue to make them relevant.

Out of service

One investment Apple was expected to make was in its iTunes music service. The company was rumored to be planning a subscription service for iTunes, rather than its current piecemeal approach, but that didn't happen. Enderle suspects it's due to Digital Rights Management (DRM) (define) issues.

"I guess that problem's a lot tougher than they thought it would be," he said. "They really didn't design the DRM with subscriptions in mind, and going back and retrofitting it has been a lot tougher than they thought."

Getting subscriptions working would be invaluable to iTunes and its new Genius service. Genius works a lot like Pandora, Last.fm and other Internet radio stations, in that one enters an artist they like, and the service plays other artists with similar qualities.

Pandora is in danger of shutting down due to the exorbitant fees it is being charged to play music, but as a service, it's a success. It averages one million listeners daily but has to pay 70 percent of its revenue to royalties. So the idea is a valid one, even if it's killing a company with it as a business model.

For iTunes 8, Genius means that while songs are suggested and you might be able to listen to a short clip, it requires customers to purchase songs individually, rather than the whole thing via subscription. Adding subscriptions will really make Genius technology take off, said Enderle.

"A subscription service would push more music," said Enderle. "This will help Apple's revenue no doubt, but I think it's a competitive response to the fact that subscription services are getting better in terms of discovery and this might be a step on Apple's part to make sure their customers don't drift away."

We care a lot

The event may have been about iPods, but there's no denying that there was significant interest in how Apple CEO Steve Jobs would look on stage. He pretty much made his answer clear by strolling on stage with the words "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated" on the screen behind him.

Later, while demonstrating the iPods, he would pick songs like "Guess I'm All Right" by Beck and "Don't Think Twice, it's all Right" by Bob Dylan. Point driven home, Steve.

Jobs assured a CNBC reporter after the event that he's doing fine. When asked where he thought all the gossip in the blogosphere came from, he responded "hedge funds with a big short position in Apple."

His sarcasm aside, while there is legitimate concern over his health for business reasons, Apple also commands one of the most dedicated customer followings with a loyalty level most firms would envy, and Macheads genuinely care about his health. And until some other executive makes a stronger showing, for most of these folks, Steve Jobs is Apple.
